Yellow, Brown or Purple Leaves
- The temperature has dropped too low (below 20°C). Plants do best between 20–25°C, and growth slows or struggles when it's colder than that. If your em-Li sits near a window with a cold draft, try moving it somewhere warmer.
- Your plant isn't getting enough nutrients - A nutrient shortage often shows up as discoloured leaves, similar to the above image.
Did you remember to add nutrients with every refill of water?
- If you've been following the correct dosing (check the label of nutrients), try adding a little more water after the nutrients next time to help it mix in thoroughly.
- The good news — if you discover your plants have been missing nutrients, it's easy to fix.
- They usually manage fine without nutrients for a while (at least a couple of weeks) and tend to bounce back quickly once they get it again 😊
Some plants aren't getting enough light

- Leaves not getting enough light usually turn yellow (especially the lower ones that are fully shaded). Just remove them and harvest regularly so that fresh, healthy leaves have room to grow. The lower leaves often sit in the shade and die off early. These should be removed.
Brown Leaves
- It's been too cold (below 20°C / 68°F) - Plants thrive best in temperatures between 20–25°C. If it's colder than 20°C, they may grow slowly and struggle.
- If your em-Li is near a drafty window, consider moving it to a warmer spot (especially in winter).
Could the leaves have been burned?
- This can happen if the plants grow up into the lights. Remove the burnt leaves, and continue to harvest regularly so they don't grow too close to the light.

Plant disease or pests
- This doesn't happen often, but plants can get diseases (e.g., fungus), or insects may get in and damage the plants.
- Sometimes, it’s enough to remove the affected leaves, while other times, it may be best to start fresh – it depends on the situation.
