Coco peat is quite different from traditional garden soil. It is a natural growing medium made from coconut husk fibres, a by-product of the coconut industry that might otherwise go to waste.

By using coco peat, em-Li gives you a clean, lightweight and consistent growing medium that is especially well suited to indoor growing.

Why do we use coco peat?

💧 Excellent water retention
Coco peat absorbs and holds moisture effectively, helping keep the roots hydrated while allowing excess water to drain away.

🌬️ Plenty of oxygen for the roots
Its loose, airy structure creates plenty of air pockets around the roots. Healthy roots need both moisture and oxygen to grow well.

🪴 A clean, consistent growing medium
Unlike garden soil, coco peat doesn't naturally contain the same mix of nutrients, soil organisms, weed seeds and other material commonly found in outdoor soil. This makes it easier to provide plants with the controlled nutrients they need through em-Li.

♻️ A more sustainable choice
Coco peat is made from coconut husk, a renewable by-product of coconut processing. Using it gives this otherwise underutilized material another useful purpose.

Can I use regular soil?

Technically, you can grow plants in other growing media, but we strongly recommend using coco peat with em-Li for the best and most consistent results.

em-Li is designed around the properties of coco peat, including its water-holding capacity and airy structure, so switching to another medium may affect how water and nutrients reach your plants.

🔄 When Should I Replace the Coco Peat?

We recommend using fresh coco peat whenever you start a new crop from seeds.

After a growing cycle, the coco peat can contain old roots, plant debris and accumulated nutrients, and its properties may have changed during the previous crop. These changes can affect seed germination and early plant growth.

For the best results, start each new batch of seeds with fresh coco peat. 🌱
